Tiago Rodrigues (PT)
Actor, author and director Tiago Rodrigues, founder of the Mundo Perfeito theatre company and artistic director of the Donna Maria II national theatre in Lisbon, is alone on stage with a box of books.
He invites the audience to learn a Shakespearean sonnet by heart with him. «Once ten people know a poem by heart, there is nothing the KGB, the CIA or the Gestapo can do about it. It will survive» , so the philosopher George Steiner, whom Rodrigues cites.
He also tells stories, about his grandmother Cândida, the Russian Nobel Prize winner Boris Pasternak, a Portuguese chef and Guy Montag, the fireman from the film «Fahrenheit 451» who discovers a whole new life by reading.
All these people believed in art's power of resistance, and in memory as a safe place for literature in politically desolate times. The evening also honours Shakespeare on the 400th anniversary of his death.
