21 – Memories of Growing Up
Weimar is a place of history and stories, of remembering and commemoration – which is why in past years the Kunstfest focused on how artists productively and creatively examined and portrayed history. This year, the Swiss artist and story collector Mats Staub investigates how world history is reflected in personal memories. His touching video installation «21 – Memories of Growing Up», for which he has meanwhile interviewed and filmed over 150 people in various countries, drew large audiences at the Kunstfest 2014. He has steadily developed his project ever since, and now, five festival editions later, he is once again a featured artist in Weimar.
For his long-term project «21», Mats Staub speaks with people of varying ages about how they remember their years growing up and records their stories on audio tape. Three months later, he visits them again, plays the recording, and films their facial expressions as they listen. Their reactions range from grinning to crying, from gestures of pride to visible introspection. The video installation «21» portrays storytellers listening to their own memories. These are intimate moments of people contemplating their lives. But beyond the context of these personal memories, viewers also gain extraordinary insights into the past and present century. The installation includes several conversations which Mats Staub recorded in Weimar.
