In his free adaptation of Anna Seghers‘s novel of exile, director Christian Petzold takes on an ever-topical theme in which the memories and experiences of refugees from the past are transposed to the present day and connected to the current migrant crisis in Europe: Georg Seidler (Franz Rogowski) is a German who flees from fascist-occupied Paris to Marseille, where by chance he finds the papers of the dead writer Franz Weidel. Assuming his identity, the papers help him secure a transit visa to Mexico. He soon meets the dead writer‘s wife Marie (Paula Beer), who is also hoping to gain a visa to Mexico.
