By 1922 there were some 4,000 picture houses in Germany, ranging from glamorous thousand seat theatres in the cities to Sunday cinemas in small town assembly rooms. These included two cinemas in Weimar: »Scherffs Lichtspielhaus« (Marktstraße 20) and the »Reform-Licht-Spiele« belonging to the court photographer Louis Held (Marienstraße 1). In 1922 alone, a total of 2,580 public performances of 373 different films were shown in the city of the classics. However, cinemas in many places – including Weimar – were forced to close temporarily due to the explosion of inflationary cost increases in November.
Under the title »Brandy, Tobacco, Cinema!«, the 4th Weimar Silent Movie Retrospective will present the cinema of 1922 in context, examining film highlights, economic circumstances and state support. Along with newsreels, introductions, lectures and discussions with experts on film, culture and music, all the film screenings will be accompanied live by internationally acclaimed silent movie musicians.
Following every screening, the audience will have the opportunity to chat and discuss the films with the organisers and film experts in our »Cine-Corner« at the Lichthaus cinema.
