Madonna´s Last Dream
The author Doğan Akhanlı has lived in Cologne as a freelance writer since 1992. Together with his translator Recai Hallaç and the actress Nadja Robiné, he will read from the recently published German translation of his novel Madonna'nın Son Hayali (Madonna's Last Dream). In the book, he tells the story of the ship «Struma» which was torpedoed in 1942 in the Black Sea, taking 769 Jewish refugees to their death. The follow-up discussion with the chief dramaturge of UFA Thomas Lauer will offer personal insights into Akhanli’s eventful life, during which he has demonstrated a deep commitment to human rights and the culture of remembrance. The author and long-time resident of Germany has been traveling to Armenia since 2005 where he and his friends work to promote understanding between Armenians, Turks and Kurds.
