Mail From Across There!
Almost 30 years after German reunification, the prejudices of Germans in East and West appear to have made a comeback. The images of the arrogant, self-centred know-it-alls from the West and those feeling disadvantaged from the East are still alive and well. Following the success of right-wing populist movements especially in the new German states, the notion of a divided identity seems to have manifested itself even further. Studies show, however, that prejudices disappear when people come in contact. This is the basis for «Mail From Across There!» which sends mail to audiences from former eastern and western Germany – via postal delivery. Starting in spring 2019, the artistic team of Futur3 will be speaking with people in Weimar and Düsseldorf. In both cities, the local inhabitants will share their stories, souvenirs and random thoughts which shed light on their identity. These will include notions, preconceptions and questions for those who live in the other half of Germany. The collected material will be arranged by Futur3 in two separate packages. One package will be sent from Weimar to Düsseldorf, the other from Düsseldorf to Weimar. The packages will serve as the focus for performances at the Kunstfest Weimar and the Asphalt Festival in Düsseldorf. Audience participation is required, as «Mail From Across There!» aims to encourage communication between the viewers. The question is, will this help change the images we have of the others and of ourselves? What would you put in a package so that others could understand you?
