Stick by me
The piece «Stick by Me» is about one and then ultimately hundreds of small, wooden ice-cream sticks which suddenly show a will of their own and won’t give the main character a moment’s rest. The result is a small tribute to the anarchic power and agelessness of child’s play. In the Scottish showcase of the famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the largest theatre festival in the world, the production was assigned to the dance section. Critics, however, pointed out that the production should have been classified as a «physical comedy», which German audiences would likely associate with slapstick. But even this description doesn’t do justice to the artistry of performer Andy Manley. Manley and his director Ian Cameron are masters of the gestural miniature. As if discovering the world with the wide eyes of a child where nothing is what it appears to be, they almost effortlessly breathe life into the objects on stage – simply and playfully. But what happens when you sleep? Do these things stay the same or do they disappear? And if so, where to?
