»Tamuro« is Japanese and means »to hang out together«. For his TAMURO concert project, artist Masamitsu Araki draws on memories of parking lots in rural Japan—places on the outskirts of smaller towns that serve as unofficial meeting spots, especially for young people, functioning as improvised social spaces beyond the confines of school, work, and home. At the same time, these spaces are informal hubs of vibrant subcultures where vehicles become mobile carriers of sound. Building on this, Araki composes a musical suite for an ensemble of modified cars. Cruising seemingly aimlessly, this ghostly motorized orchestra moves through the space, unfolding a fleeting concert at dusk. For Kunstfest Weimar, the project from Kyoto is being reimagined in collaboration with members of the local car-tuning scene and performed on the Festwiese Apolda.

A shuttle bus service will be available on both days of the event for the journey from Weimar to Apolda and back.

To complement the performance, the video installation → »TAMURO and Petrol Station«, featuring two films by Masamitsu Araki and Cornelia Erdmann, is being shown at the → Festival centre: 20 August – 24 August • 26 August • 31 August • 3–4 September, 4.00 pm – 8.00 pm in a continuous loop, free admission.
