Workshop »Dimensionen pluraler Erinnerungskultur: Wie gehen wir mit Gleichzeitigkeit um?«

Whose history is remembered and whose is not? How does memory function in a violent present? The culture of remembrance is never neutral: it is contested, multifaceted, and always a reflection of social power dynamics. In this two-hour workshop, we will explore together what a pluralistic culture of remembrance can mean and what dimensions it encompasses. Using a coordinate system of simultaneities—between past and future, between high and low social visibility—we will map out different themes of memory, recognize the diversity of perspectives, and bring potential areas of tension to light. In small groups, we’ll explore the following questions: Which perspectives are missing? What alliances are needed? And how can we productively deal with feeling overwhelmed? The workshop invites reflection and exchange for anyone engaged in remembrance work, education, art, or activism.
The number of participants is limited. No prior knowledge is required.
Nicole Schweiß is a teacher of German, education, drama, literature, and art from Cologne, and an advocate for anti-discrimination education. She hosts the podcast -> »Kleine Pause – Begegnungen in der Teeküche«, (A Short Break – Encounters in the Tea Room), in which she takes a diversity-sensitive, anti-discrimination, and—as far as possible—multi-perspective look at the German school system.
Igor Mitchnik is the Executive Director of Austausch e.V., a Berlin-based NGO that has focused on civil society and conflict management initiatives in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the South Caucasus since the early 1990s. Between 2019 and 2024, he worked primarily in Ukraine. After the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he worked mainly in the field of humanitarian aid, collaborating with international organizations such as Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE) and Mercy Corps. He holds a dual master’s degree in politics and security from the University of Tartu, Estonia, and University College London, United Kingdom.
