Kino mon ami: Thomas Heise Retrospektive
A masterful documentarian of East German society in transition
Documentary filmmaker Thomas Heise (1955–2024) was not only a chronicler of the East, but also a consistently honest and uncompromising film maker. Heise’s films are characterised by generous conversations, carefully selected imagery and a willingness to consistently challenge his own perspective. Personal stories are interwoven with German history, and as documentary testimonies they continue to raise essential questions today about upheaval in (East) German society. Over four evenings, the Mon Ami cinema will screen two of Heise’s short films along with the Halle-Neustadt trilogy, that was produced between 1992 and 2007.
