Messias. An oratorio in three parts by Georg Friedrich Händel (HWV 56)

A community oratorio by Georg Friedrich Händel

Handel’s »Messiah« tells the biblical story of the collective waiting and hope for salvation. The biblical texts, set to music by Handel in just 24 days, do not follow a continuous narrative. Instead, the three parts of the oratorio unfold as three thematically organized collages that give voice to the Messiah’s promise, passion, and redemption. Hovering over the narrative of creation, suffering, and resurrection is the question: What can we hope for when we live in community? A citizens’ choir from Weimar explores this question together with the opera choir and members of the DNT ensemble. In the process, 100 voices come together on stage, bringing with them 100 ideas of hope and redemption in the present.
