Diana Anselmo: Pas Moi
Culture beyond re-education and golden records
»Pas Moi« examines the power dynamics and structures of domination woven into mainstream historiography, analyzing the origins of the first technical devices for the recording, transmission, and reproduction of sound from the perspective of Deaf people and sign language. The celebrated technologies, which shaped the future of the music industry, were sometimes developed with audist and eugenic intent: deafness was viewed as a disease to be eradicated rather than a cultural identity with its own language and community. For instance, 19th-century speech-capture devices were invented to serve as instruments of forced re-education within the framework of so-called speech therapy. Hearing could now be technically measured and visualized—treated like an object made of data and figures from which a supposed “norm” could be derived. With critical humor, Diana Anselmo and his team shed light on the history inscribed in these technological innovations and counter the hearing world’s normative concepts with visions of their own. What if start from a point way beyond the notion of the »deficit« when thinking about history, identity, and progress?
»Pas Moi« is part of the German Sign Language (DGS) themed weekend, to which both hearing and deaf people are invited. Together with → »Schlucken« , the event is available as part of a → Kombi-Ticket.
DIANA ANSELMO
DIANA ANSELMO (b. 1997, Palermo) is a Deaf, queer artist, writer, and activist. Bilingual in Italian Sign Language (LIS) and spoken Italian, Anselmo made his debut while studying theater at IUAV in Venice with the performance »Autoritratto in 3 atti« (Self-Portrait in Three Acts, 2021), which continues to tour across Europe. In 2022, Anselmo performed in »Le Sacre du Printemps« by Saša Asentić and Xavier Le Roy. His performance »Je Vous Aime« (2023) examines the implications of re-education for Deaf people in the context of the early moving-image projections that eventually gave rise to cinema. Building on this, in 2024 Diana ventured into the visual arts, presenting an exhibition of the same title at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin. In 2024/25, this was followed by the exhibition »deafnotdead« at the Eugenia Delfini Gallery in Rome. For the lecture performance »Pas Moi« (2025), Anselmo continues his power-critical artistic research into the historical entanglement of technological developments with audist and phonocentric agendas—drawing upon minor archives, counter-histories, and situated knowledge passed from body to body. Diana Anselmo is a founding member of Al.Di.Qua.—Europe’s first association by and for disabled artists—and serves as an accessibility manager for arts festivals.
