An interactive and immersive multimedia performance with music and dance
‘Algorithmic Harmony’ is a technically advanced, immersive multimedia performance that combines live music and dance, visual art and technology. This work consists of interacting musicians, live musicians and dancers in real-time interaction incorporating both kinaesthetic and acoustic perception. The project features four dancers on stage and the acoustic elements by the live performance with three traditional Chinese instruments musicians. The visualization is used to project the dance into the kinetic movements of a multitude of luminous particles on screens. The result is a constantly transforming, interactive performance in which the audience is invited to become part of the performance and enter the stage in small groups to mingle with the performers. This changes and realigns the movements of the dancers and thus the acoustic elements of the performance. Choreographer SUN Shang-chi, who was responsible for the successful dance performance at the Bauhaus-Museum for Kunstfest 2022, and conceptual artist CHEN Yi regard their stage work as an abstract model of social interaction and the interdependence of humans who are exposed to countless, frequently imperceptible influences that determine their actions. How humans perform in a social space, either physically or virtually – through social networks, for example – can thus be seen as both an act of conformism and of self-assertion.
