Return of the great dance legend to Weimar with a celebrated solo to Bach's mythical piano work
“My walking is my dancing” – this quotation could be taken as Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s credo as it describes her artistic path from simple movements to the complex dances of her stage creations. The choreographer founded her dance company ‘Rosas’ in Brussels back in 1983. De Keersmaeker, who was born in June 1960, has been one of the most influential and inspiring artists ever since – with an impact that goes far beyond dance.
This living legend of world dance now comes to Weimar with a work that delivers an intensely poetic exploration of Bach’s famous late work the ‘Goldberg Variations’, in which the composer probes the boundaries of musical themes in a game of variations, canons and fugues – performed live by the Belgian concert pianist Alain Franco. In the various musical voyages of dis- covery she has undertaken during her career, wherever possible De Keersmaeker looks for direct communication with her (live) musicians within a rigidly structured framework. As a result, the choreography for this solo – even if it also appears light-footed, playful and some- times even mischievous – is also prescribed in advance down to the last detail. The Goldberg Variations with herself as the soloist under her own direction is therefore a dance concert in the best sense of the phrase: a union of music and dance in which the twin elements of music and movement retain their independence while combining with each other harmoniously.
Afterwards, the General Delegate of Flanders in Germany invites you to a champagne reception in the foyer of the DNT.
