The physically disabled Governor of Turin brutally suppresses an uprising. Meanwhile, his daughter falls in love with the prisoner Octavio, and wants to save him from execution. The father agrees to the marriage: but only to make his daughter a widow shortly afterwards: it is a gallows wedding. This dark and expressive film creates an atmosphere of menace that inevitably anticipates its fateful ending.
