Gerhard Lamprecht condenses Thomas Mann’s original novel into a poignant family drama that moves audiences through its realism and above all through its intelligently chosen lead actor. Thomas Buddenbrook, the head of a respected family of Lübeck merchants, takes over the city’s grain deliveries from Buenos Aires and is elected to the Senate. However, his business sense means he loses sight of his family: his wife and child are neglected, his sister marries a conman and his brother Christian, an idler, fails to make the vitsal transfer to South America, plunging the family into ruin. The film was fully reconstructed for the first time in 1999 by the Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek.
