Two worn-out heroes searching for a possible future
A bare room, two men, one chair. Harsh light, two doors and countless questions. Locked in or locked out, they dance on their own inner volcano. Human history is in their bones, fragments of their blissful memories appear in flashes but the future lies heavy in the air. What should they do? Seize power, just carry on as before or hope for the solution after every sentence? The two characters are caught together in limbo between panic and euphoria: like two worn-out heroes – such as Shakespeare’s Hamlet or Heiner Müller’s Debuisson from ‘The Mission’ – they are still waiting for Godot and share this dream/ nightmare that does not want to end... until they wake up in a possible future, in a completely new age with undreamt of possibilites.
This project, which receives its German premiere in Weimar, has a long history: in 2018- 2019 the director Lydia Ziemke established an international co-operation between her com- pany suite42 from Berlin, the ZOUKAK Theatre Company from Beirut and the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. This yielded two productions which could not be presented often due to the Pandemic. Ziemke reacted to this by reconceiving the project in Beirut together with suite42 and Zoukak and staging the world pre- miere there. It is acted by the Swiss actor Roland Bonjour, who has not only been seen in Ham- burg but also at Theaterhaus Jena, and Stefan Stern, a protagonist at major theatres such as the Schaubühne in Berlin and the Thalia Theater in Hamburg. He was seen at Kunstfest Weimar last year in the title role of Amir Reza Koohestani’s ‘Danton’s Death Reloaded’.
