The disfigured Quasimodo lives a reclusive life as a bellringer in a tower of Notre Dame cathedral. He falls in love with the beautiful dancer Esmeralda – but so do representatives of the church and Phoebus, the Captain of the Watch. At this point, misfortune strikes. Esmeralda is blamed for a murder, while Quasimodo is hu- miliated and has to fight for his life. This spectacular large-scale production adapted from Victor Hugo, for which life-sized buildings were constructed on the lot of Universal Studios, set new standards for monumental Hollywood films.
