This film shot in the Swiss mountains sketches the life of ten-year-old Jean. Together with his sister he is grieving for his mother. In the course of the year his overwhelmed father takes in a
widow and her daughter. The family is rapidly overcome by jealousy, hatred and indifference –
especially between the step-children – that almost lead to the worst. Hailed as one of the best European films of 1925, cinematic innovations made it possible to film some remarkable night scenes.
