Part Two of Fritz Lang’s saga tells of the down- fall of the Burgundians. Kriemhild, who lost her husband Siegfried at the hand of Hagen von Tronjes, fulfills her oath of vengeance in grim fashion. She accepts the suit of Etzel, King of the Huns, and then, some time later has her tribe come visit. Old tensions then resurface at King Etzel’s court. What ensues is the most bitter requiem for German virtues ever produced in film history: a parable of the destructive an- ger of World War One as the studio scenery of Etzelburg burns on the Ufa lot. Part 1 ‘Siegfried’ is shown on 26.8.
