Introduction — Dr Anett Werner-Burgmann on the background of this screen adaptation
»Around the World in 80 Days« (Die Reise um die Erde in 80 Tagen) // DCP format | tinted | Germany | 1918/19 | 113 min | age 12+
This bestseller by Jules Verne has been depicted in film countless times. Following an adaptation from 1913, which has since been lost, the Richard Oswald production occupies second place in film history, despite the title having to be altered slightly due to a copyright dispute with the Verne estate in 1921. At his exclusive club, Phileas Fogg places a bet that he will be able to circumnavigate the globe in just 80 days. Accompanied by his servant Passepartout and pursued by the detective Fix, who suspects the adventurer of bank robbery, the story develops into a richly varied detective comedy.
