In her multi-award-winning drama »Farewell to Europe«, director Maria Schrader shows part of the life of the Jewish-Austrian writer Stefan Zweig, one of the most popular authors of his time. The film shows Zweig‘s years in exile: at the height of his global fame, he is forced to emigrate in 1934 – Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, New York and Petrópolis are all places he takes refuge. Faced with unspeakable horror, deprived of his homeland and urged to take a political stand, he is driven to despair by what he knows about Europe‘s downfall – something he foresaw at an early stage. A powerfully visual film about a great artist and the story of him losing his old home and looking for a new one – with Josef Hader as Stefan Zweig.
