With “Faust” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe has written an unparalleled classic and secured a
lasting place for himself not only on literature’s Mount Olympus, but also in the nation’s curriculum. Part One of Germany’s all-time favourite in theatre history has already been retold on the Stellwerk stage in an entirely new version with a young ensemble. Less well known – but no less worth telling – is the sequel to the story featuring the go-getting academic Faust. In this work he is ultimately still searching for an answer to the burning question of what holds the world
together at its innermost core. With Mephisto as his faithful, albeit rather unreliable sidekick, Faust embarks on a headlong journey through time and space, exploring politics, economics and mythology. He interferes in the fates of ancient gods and is caught up in political machinations while searching in all corners of the world for the promise of contentment. This tangled and supposedly unperformable story reads like a parable for a young generation in the 21st century that has been affected by various global and personal crises and left searching longingly for some sense of meaning and fulfilment. To counter these crises, the ensemble enters the game: Faust fights his way from act to act as if from level to level – only to end up confronting his greatest opponent in the finale. Will he and the ensemble come any closer to the meaning of life? The production is directed by Till Wiebel, dramaturge, author, and director at the Junges Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, who also staged the award-winning first part at stellwerk.
