An old woman in Tokyo, whose son gives her a robot so that she no longer has to live alone and an American who takes a road trip through California with his new robot girlfriend. These are the “love stories from the future” that director Isa Willinger tells in a film investigating how human beings live together with AI. Humanoid robots have long since ceased to be pure science fiction and are likely to become part of everyday life in the near future. But how will these relationships
change us humans? In Isa Willinger’s documentary film, these futuristic love stories by no means always work out harmoniously as the action consistently revolves around failed communication and mutual incomprehension, providing some absurd moments along the way. “Hi, AI” asks questions about the future of human beings in a world where robots and Artificial Intelligence are increasing presences. In 2019 the film was nominated for the German Film Prize in the Best Documentary category.
