Sustainability is not only the product of innovation but also what drives it. This discussion explores the question of how sustainable innovations can spread and establish themselves – in the theatre as well as in industry, architecture, and other aspects of everyday life. One particular factor is people's resistance in accepting sustainable alternatives: there are already numerous innovative materials and ways of working that are available as alternatives. Our society must be aware is also aware that it only has the choice between acting now or reacting later or, in the worst case, being forced to look on passively as the basis for our lives is taken away. And yet, the will to try out new things is often inhibited because it appears simpler to carry on using old solutions. What first steps can be taken to overcome this complacency? What strategies can be applied to achieve collective change? What are the challenges in achieving this? How can incentives be created?
Barbara Ehnes and Nadia Fistarol, stage designers and Professors at the Universities of the Arts in Dresden and Zürich, present their project »Stuff - New Material Cycles in the Theatre«. »Stuff« is an open source project together with theatre students and professionals whose aim is to increase ecological and sustainable thinking, research, and action. Currently, a website is being developed to gather knowledge and provide resources to create renewable and sustainable alternatives to the typical production and building practices in theatre. In the discussion that follows they will be joined by a specialist from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Bauhaus University Weimar, an innovation researcher, and a workshop manager. The discussion will be moderated by our cooperation partner »Der Theaterverlag«. Further information can be found in the leaflet for the supporting programme, which will be published shortly before the KUNSTFEST in August, as well as on our homepage.
We cordially invite you to follow »Nachhaltigkeit als Motor für Innovationen?« via our livestream. You can find it on the starting page.
