Friedrich Nietzsche was more than just a philosopher – he was a genuine all-rounder: thinker,
composer and consistently occupied with the forces that music was able to release within him. The fact that this “late son of Weimar” (who also died here) is inevitably associated with the Nietzsche-Gedächtnishalle – later used as a radio station – inspired the WDR Jazz Prize winner,
nationally acclaimed bassist and Weimar jazz professor Manfred Bründl to create this special
project. Kunstfest Weimar has been able to secure the services of none less than star bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff and the ACHAVA Festival Thüringia for their joint closing and opening
concert – who will present an unfamiliar side of Nietzsche together with Manfred Bründl and pianist Rolf Zielke. The arranger Florian Ross has created new interpretations of Nietzsche’s song
compositions – jazzy harmonies and marked rhythms enable the philosopher to be seen in a surprising new light. The Thüringer Bach Collegium conducted by Gernot Süßmuth accompanies this top-quality trio. Thomas Quasthoff proves that he left classical singing behind him some time ago with songs by American jazz legends. An intimate concert experience with highly restricted
audience capacity, this evening that unites the past, present and future in music promises to be
many-faceted, rich in contrasts and clearly unique.
