One of the earliest and most remarkable documentary films shows original footage from the famous failed expedition to the South Pole in 1914–1916. The expeditionary vessel Endurance falls victim to a change in the weather and is crushed by pack ice. 22 men and 70 dogs were left behind on Elephant Island, while the Captain Sir Ernest Shackleton set off with 5 men on a heroic, 800-mile-long rescue mission. Thanks to his endeavours, the entire crew could ultimately be rescued alive from the South Polar Sea. It was not until May 2022 that the wreck of the Endurance was discovered by a robot diver at a depth of 3,000 under the sea – a historical sensation!
