Ute Lemper hardly needs any introduction [to German audiences]. In her 40-year stage, film and concert career this unique artist has made a name for herself around the globe. She has been acclaimed from Berlin to Paris and London and on Broadway for her powerful character performances as well as her concerts and original compositions.
Now, to mark her 60th birthday, Lemper has published her autobiography, entitled ‘Die Zeitreisende’ (Time Traveller), which has made it to the top 3 of the SPIEGEL bestseller list. Commenting on the book, she says: “The days go by so fast now I can’t count them any more, one birthday follows another and they become insignificant. The children grow up and become adults in double-quick time and hoping they will have a good life in this world of ours is trying. Time surrounds me with facts and makes the past feel astonishingly close. Long-term memory is an amazing device with its colourful emotional filters. These are a desired deception, a relative mirror. Now I look in the other leaf of that mirror and begin my journey…” These words also provide the cue for her new programme: a compelling journey through 40 years on stage. The programme is sustained by a passion and enthusiasm that holds audiences spellbound. The evening is full of poetry, both in music and words. The selection of songs, which includes works by Ute Lemper herself, by Jacques Brel, Kurt Weill, Friedrich Hollaender, Leo Ferre and other composers Ute Lemper admires, gives the evening artistic gravitas and makes it an unforgettable experience.
