WELTENECHO! FILME DER WEIMARER REPUBLIK IN DEN WEIMARER KINOS 1924

While the Weimar Republic was able to recover from inflation from 1924 onwards, the pub- lic went to Weimars two cinemas looking for distraction, with several performances daily and programmes that changed every week. At Marienstraße 1 there was “Helds Lichtspiele” owned by court photographer Louis Held”, while at Marktstraße 20 the “Lichtspiele vorm. Th. Scherff” could be found. The programmes for these two cinemas represent a substantial cross-section of everyday cinema in Germany in 1924: a total of 463 feature and short films of all genres could be admired, while then proportion of foreign titles – particularly American produc- tions – rose to 220 titles after post-war immigration controls were lifted. Of these 463 films the curators of the silent film series have been able to trace approx. 170 titles remaining in ex- istence, though many do so only in fragmentary

form. From these, they have selected around 20 available films. ‘Echoing the World! Films of the Weimar Republic in Weimar cinemas in 1924’ – under this title the 6th Weimar Silent Film Retrospective contextualises the cinemat- ic year 1924 between providing entertainment and presenting an image of its time, between cinema becoming an art form and becoming an industry. Accompanied by historic newsreels, introductions, lectures and film discussions with experts on film, culture and music, all the film screenings will be scored live by internationally renowned silent film musicians.

After every event, the public will have the op- portunity to chat about the films in comfort with the producers and experts in our “Cine-Corner“ at the Lichthaus cinema.
