Prodromos Tsinikoris: 96%

Landscapes of Devastation: Tracing the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki

“96%” reflects on the near-total destruction of Thessaloniki’s Jewish community during the Nazi occupation of Greece in World War II. Ninety-six percent of the Jewish population was deported to concentration camps and murdered. Drawing on archival material and personal recollections, the play examines the appropriation of Jewish property, the resulting transformation of the city’s landscape as well as the complicity of the local Christian population. The performers engage in a dialogue with both visible and hidden facets of Thessaloniki to paint a social portrait of the city. An almost forgotten history comes back to life—not merely as a retrospective, but as a question for the present: How is history remembered, what memories are erased? How do societies come to normalize and ultimately repeat acts of violence? And what role does theater play in this process?
