Lina Majdalanie & Rabih Mroué: Four Walls and a Roof

A thought-provoking theater evening about exile and freedom of conscience

In 1947, Bertolt Brecht, who had fled to the United States to escape the Nazi regime, was interrogated by the »House on Un-American Activities Committee«. With critical humor, creative digressions, and music by Hanns Eisler, the Lebanese artist duo Majdalanie and Mroué shed light on the transcripts of that memorable interrogation and bring them into dialogue with their own biographical experiences and a broader reflection on life in exile. »Four Walls and a Roof« deals with ideological confusion, clashes of opposing attitudes, and refuge in an elusive elsewhere. In their engagement with Brecht’s statements and works, current political and social themes resonate, as do questions about how to deal with restrictions on freedom of expression and on art. Moving beyond preconceived judgments, Majdalanie and Mroué—accompanied by pianist Henrik Kairies—have created a thought-provoking theater performance from montages of text and images.
