Beneath the Paris Opera lies a labyrinth of eerie catacombs, where a phantom wreaks havoc. Out of love, it blackmails the opera management into giving the singer Christine a leading role. Finally, the mysteriously masked Phantom kidnaps his beloved and reveals his gruesome face. Exactly 100 years ago, »The Phantom of the Opera« first flickered across Weimar’s screens and, with its masterful horror effects and early color footage, is considered a milestone of silent film. As the highlight of this year’s silent film retrospective, the Weimar Staatskapelle will accompany the film with the rousing score composed by Gabriel Thibaudeau for small orchestra, organ, synthesizer, and soprano, conducted by Burkhard Götze, winner of the 2021 German Silent Film Award.
