CAPELLA Cracoviensis has struck a chord with early music lovers for around fifty years now. It has played guest performances at important European festivals such as the SCHWETZINGEN FESTIVAL and the BACHFEST LEIPZIG, as well as in many major European concert halls, including the CONCERTGEBOUW AMSTERDAM. But the institution doesn’t just consist of the Krakow-based choir and renowned chamber orchestra that play on original historical instruments. It also includes the OPERA RARA FESTIVAL KRAKOW for contemporary forms of music theatre, with which the KUNSTFEST WEIMAR is planning a co-production next year. Reason enough to introduce this prestigious partner a year early on its ‘home’ turf: the conductor and musical director Jan Tomasz Adamus promises a “nimble-footed” open-air concert to “conclude the summer”, compiled to integrate the ensemble’s current focus, which is to perform all of Joseph Haydn’s symphonies by 2023 — quite a feat, as there are 108 of them! In Weimar, Haydn’s Symphonies No. 70 in D major and 71 in B-flat major will be juxtaposed with W. A. Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony No. 41 in C major, which was composed at almost exactly the same time. Three concert arias by Mozart will round off the programme, performed by mezzo-soprano Natalia Kawalek, who has been a rising star of the early music scene since she left the THEATER AN DER WIEN’s ‘Junges Ensemble’. In addition to guest appearances at her former workplace, she has sung at houses such as the BOLSCHOI THEATRE in Moscow (Armida in Handel’s Rinaldo) and the English GLYNDEBOURNE FESTIVAL (Cherubino in Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro), and made guest appearances at the major European early music festivals.
