A theatrical research project attempting to trace those affected in Thuringia by Nazi eugenics crimes
For a long time the full extent of the eugenics crimes committed under the Nazi regime was cloaked in silence. Even now, little is known about the details of this chapter in German history. For years, hundreds of thousands of sick, maladjusted and mentally or physically disabled human beings were systematically forcibly sterilised or murdered – this was made possible by and carried out in hospitals, sanatoria, mental hospitals, public health departments and homes. For decades the victims of this mass crime were denied official recognition as victims of Nazi persecution. This was only granted in 2022, which is why those affected are also called the forgotten victims of Nazism. We want to remember them! Together with an ensemble of young adults of the stellwerk weimar, the theatre collective projekt-il will research the lives of victims of forced sterilisation and Nazi euthanasia, naming where this was done and by whom in order to emphasise the relevance of these partly forgotten stories in the present and make them visible on stage. The work is based on biographical material from those affected and a graphic novel by the artist Anke Zapf. The young people will approach this important subject with respect in a documentary collage on the stellwerk stage featuring evocative projected illustrations that are drawn live.
In the run-up to the production, there will be an accompanying thematic program with the Lernort Weimar e. V.. All further information can be found here.
