A seemingly normal childhood in the 1980s captured on countless video cassettes, showing a small family in which everyone plays their own role. ‘A Life on Tape’ tells the tragic life story of a woman who stumbled into the role of a mother and could never properly accept it. Using over 100 hours of her father’s Super-8 and video footage, the director reconstructs her parents’ lives as young lovers in the 1970s, their founding a family and that family’s eventual break-up. Privately and politically, the film travels through the decades to document the inner conflicts of a woman whose search for self-realisation epitomises the life experiences of a generation of West German women.
After the screening, Gaswerk invites you to a discussion with the director Melanie Lischker.
