Enthusiasm for the ways of life and the cultures of indigenous peoples in America has always taken the form of ethnological studies, clichéd adaptations or loose imitation. Viewed with suspicion by the State, many interest groups fascinated by Native American studies formed in East Germany. After 1990, this ‘scene’ grew even more differentiated. Many groups persisted, while a distinct ‘Western Culture’ began to pervade, which was devoted to the historical phenomenon of cowboys and their way of life. The photography exhibition by Jascha Fibich, graduate of BAUHAUS UNIVERSITY WEIMAR, searches modern life
for enthusiasm — past and present — for the indigenous peoples of America. It scrutinises the image of “Indians” in Germany and addresses the discourse around cultural appropriation.
