In Part Two, we reach the final showdown between Mabuse and public prosecutor von Wenck. Mabuse uses his powers of mass suggestion in order to disarm his opponent and ends up provoking a street battle that only the Army can resolve – before he himself descends into madness.
To the public, Lang’s daily life images were already highly familiar. Though heightened and stylized, they touched the nerve of their time. Mabuse was everywhere and he could be blamed for all the crimes and mysteries of the post-war years. To a certain extent, Mabuse represented the embodiment of all the negative impulses of the time.
