An audio installation about the sociotope allotment garden – to be heard in a garden pub in Weimar.

Allotment gardens are a small happiness for many. But is the height of the hedges right and does the cultivation comply with the regulations? What will the next generation make of the allotment paradises? An acoustic garden tour in Weimar, Leipzig and Berlin. For a long time, allotment gardens were considered the epitome of German bourgeoisie: neatly trimmed hedges, petty rules and bland club formality. But the image is changing – in times of species extinction and climate change, the ridiculed idylls have a new, ecological raison d'être. They are also important on a social level. They bring together people from different backgrounds and generations whose attitudes and behaviors inevitably collide. After all, allotment gardens are society in microcosm. Since we generally tend to associate primarily with people who are similar to us, allotment gardens offer very special communi- cation platforms in the city. But as different as the gardeners on an allotment may be, they are also similar: they all seek contact with nature, fight slugs in their own way, and find a certain satisfaction in pulling veg- etables out of the ground. The feature delves into the sociotope of allotment gardens, lets people with the most diverse backgrounds and motivations talk about their gardening lives, and explores the significance of green colonies for the city.
