With the composition “Echo-Room” that accompanies the interactive installation by Ivan Liu, Ensemble +voce+ embarks on an acoustic and physical investigation of space – and the forces that run through it. The three musicians use their instruments and physicality to explore the installation and to make audible what is visible, touchable or hidden. The space, audience, protagonists and the site itself are turned into a shared surface for sound: an experiment between the real and the virtual, between stillness and eruptive movement which questions our
own perceptions of fiction and reality. The underlying installation “Echoes of the Land” is based on the so-called spring-block model used in seismology – a system that simulates the movements of real earthquakes. The audience’s physical exertions can build up energy within a mechanical system until a critical point is reached: kinetic energy is then released, unleashing a series of noises and movements. Supported by granular synthesis – a sound-generating
technique that translates the smallest impulses into dense textures of sound – an instrumental
echo of the earth itself is produced. +voce+’s performance transforms this “instrument” into a living musical event. Sound landscapes are generated in real time that lie between improvisation, composition and a physical process. An opportunity to relocate perception – in between natural forces and artistic design.
