VON JARRY ZU MIRÓ UND WILSON

The great Spanish surrealist Joan Miró was not alone in feeling a close affinity with the Bauhaus movement and in citing Paul Klee as a major source of inspiration. In his own way, the director and visual artist Robert Wilson has repeatedly engaged with the Bauhaus: He was Visiting Professor at the Bauhaus University Weimar in 2003 and created an installation focusing on Liszt’s »Via Crusis« for KUNSTFEST under Nike Wagner in 2012. In 2023, Robert Wilson’s new work based on Alfred Jarry’s »Ubu Roi« with figurines designed by Joan Miró is scheduled to receive its German premiere at KUNSTFEST. Jarry’s play is possibly the most significant anti-war and anti-totalitarian farce in the history of theatre and is alarmingly topical at present. Reconstructions of Miró’s two central figurines will be exhibited at the ACC Galerie Weimar as part of KUNSTFEST 2022. Both the reconstructions and new original figures will be built by the Catalan artist, puppet-maker and director Joan Baixas.

As a prelude to Wilson’s scenic project, which KUNSTFEST plans to present as part of its week focussing on the centenary of the Bauhaus in 2023, the American artistic star will offer insights into his work and thinking about Miró and the Bauhaus in a public discussion at the end of this year’s festival. Also taking part in the panel discussion are Joan Baixas and the Majorcan museums director and curator Imma Prieto, who has run the prestigious Es Baluard contemporary art museum in Palma since 2019.
