A panel discussion
Exile is everywhere. The number of people in exile is growing. Around 3.6 percent of the world's population are migrants, and this number will continue to grow in 2024. According to a report by the UN Refugee Agency, 120 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced in May of this year.
people worldwide were forcibly displaced - "more than the combined population of Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands". Migration is a global fact, but for every single migrant it is an individual borderline experience. Often, the diaspora cannot replace the homeland, as the example of the Armenians or, again these days, the example of the Jews shows.
The shadows of political, religious and cultural conflicts lie over the exile society. Life in exile - what does that actually mean for the individual? For the culture of those who emigrate? For the culture of the host countries? The Russian opposition activist and historian Irina Scherbakowa (patron of the Kunstfest Weimar 2024), the Israeli-German psychologist and author Ahmed Mansour, who is of Arab-Palestinian origin, the Iranian journalist Omid Rezaee and the Chinese-German writer and poet XU Pei will discuss these topics. The event will be moderated by MDR presenter Yara Hoffmann.
