IM KREISE DER UNSTERBLICHEN

Lichthaus Kino

The third Weimar Silent Film Retrospective is dedicated to the ‘circles of immortals’, those greats of Weimar cinema and their relationship with the film industry, the public and the art of filmmaking. The LICHTHAUS CINEMA, the BAUHAUS UNIVERSITY WEIMAR, the WEIMAR CITY ARCHIVE and the KUNSTFEST WEIMAR present rare cinematic works that were particularly successful in Weimar’s theatres 100 years ago. The day-to-day activities of Weimar cinemas in 1921 have been brought back to life using reconstructed programmes from two local cinemas, ‘Scherffs Lichtspielhaus’ and ‘Reform-Licht-Spiele’. Historical newsreels, introductions, lectures and film discussions with experts from the fields of cinema, culture and music, the films will be critically placed in their historical context. All films will be set to music live by internationally renowned silent film musicians, with the exception of one recording of historical music. A particular highlight will be the participation of the Staatskapelle Weimar during two screenings at the
DEUTSCHES NATIONALTHEATER.

Silent Film Musicians

Burkhard Götze
is a conductor, arranger and trombonist. For several years now, he has specialised in conducting orchestral music for silent films, and he also founded the METROPOLIS ORCHESTRA BERLIN, the first cinema orchestra to be established on European soil. He has conducted numerous world premieres, including at the BUNDESKUNSTHALLE BONN as part of the BTHVN 2020 festival, as well as the 2020 world premiere of the original music for The Golem: How He Came into the World (Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam) at the DEUTSCHES NATIONALTHEATER in WEIMAR, as part of the KUNSTFEST WEIMAR 2020.

Matthias Hirth, trained jazz pianist, composer and music educator from Dresden, has been accompanying silent films since 2002. His musically varied repertoire ranges from jazz, electronic music and neo-classical to salsa and Latin. His international guest performances include the Festival de Cine Alemán in Madrid.

Daan van den Hurk studied classical piano, jazz piano and composition in Utrecht. In 2008, he came second in the HOLLAND CASINO JAZZ AWARDS. He is also a sought-after silent film pianist and has performed at numerous international silent film festivals, as well as being the founder and curator of the Netherlands Silent Film Festival in Eindhoven.

French pianist Camille Phelep studied classical music in Paris and Geneva. In addition to chamber music, she is increasingly focusing on composition and improvisation to accompany silent films and is a pianist with the METROPOLIS ORCHESTRA BERLIN. In 2017, she and actress Sophie Lavallée founded the LIVING CARTOON DUET, a rich blend of music, cinema and drama, which tours across Germany and France.

In 1999, Tobias Rank and Gunthard Stephan founded the WANDERKINO. This mobile cinema specialises in silent films and travels all around Europe with a vintage fire engine and old projectors. Rank studied piano, composition, harpsichord and improvisation in Leipzig, where he also worked as a lecturer in piano and song composition. Alongside this, he has also composed incidental music and chansons.

Pianist and composer Richard Siedhoff is one of the most sought-after rising stars in his field. Since 2008, he has accompanied over 300 silent films on the piano, played regular guest performances at international festivals, appeared on several DVD recordings, and written several orchestral scores for silent films. In 2020, he was awarded the DEUTSCHE STUMMFILMPREIS for his reconstruction of the original film music from The Golem: How He Came into the World.

Mykyta Sierov was born in Kiev, and studied classical oboe at the conservatoire there and at the FRANZ LISZT UNIVERSITY OF MUSIC in Weimar. As a freelance soloist and orchestral musician, he is a sought-after oboist in various chamber music ensembles. He plays not only classical music, but also jazz, pop and his own compositions, as well as music for silent films with various partners. He has also performed numerous solo concerts in Germany and abroad.

Anna Vavilkina is the only full-time cinema organist in Germany. She has been playing the cinema organ at BABYLON KINO in Berlin every week for many years. The trained organist from Moscow is also in demand as a church organist and pianist. She has received numerous awards for her organ improvisation.
