After the performance of “Scoooootch!” at Kunstfest Weimar 2023, Amélie Poirier continues her artistic exploration of the playful and performative dimension of objects: “Magnéééétique” puts a nostalgic object on stage – the good, old audio cassette, something most young theatregoers have probably never seen. In her production, which is recommended for ages 3 and over, the choreographer and director Poirier highlights the changing dynamics of power and consolation between two dancing performers. Inspired by a cassette’s usual range of functions (play, pause, fast forward etc.) a movement language evolves in response to the part which is recited by one of the performers. Like two magnetic poles that attract and repel each other, their bodies and their interactions tell of interpersonal relationships – ranging from the tense to the harmonious. The play highlights our need to come together as well as for independence. This generates an interdisciplinary piece of sound and movement theatre whose anarchy will thrill the very youngest audiences while also keeping older ages entertained with its humour and timing.
