The performance “Mia Kermis en Ravensbrück” is an intimate, poetic reflection on the traces left
by the traumas of war and their cross-generational impact. Stefanie Claes tells the story of her grandmother, Aline Vervoort, who together with her parents was arrested in Winksele during the Second World War and deported to Ravensbrück concentration camp. Her life was forever marred by the year she spent imprisoned there, surviving the cold, hunger and maltreatment. As a child, Stefanie Claes felt the unspoken shadow of her family’s past long before she was aware of the truth. She sometimes had dreams of soldiers invading her street, forcing her to flee. It was not until she was a teenager that she began talking to her grandmother and mother about their indelible family history – and started to understand that the traces of war were all around her.
Stefanie Claes developed her very own theatre language for “Mia Kermis en Ravensbrück”,
technically, personally and poetically. She continues her grandmother Aline’s story on stage, not as a historical retelling but as a vivid echo across the generations. “Mia Kermis en Ravensbrück”
is a nonverbal, powerful performance for adults and children over the age of 10 that is based on conversations Stefanie Claes had and on excerpts of her own letters, as well as on documentaries, historical works of reference and interviews with trauma experts. She creates her own world with an overhead marker pen and a Polylux overhead projector…
