Contemporary musical theater - Intoxicated into the downfall

In his libretto »missing in cantu«, the Austrian star playwright Thomas Köck, a guest at the Kunstfest Weimar for the fourth time in a row with a world pre- miere, once again describes an end-time scenario: the global, capitalist system at the end of centuries of systematic destruction of its own basis of life. South American jungles, the ruins of a power center and U.S. suburban settlements are the setting for the conquest and downfall of the "New World". In an exemplary way, the play raises the question of how the Western way of life and its unbridled, intoxicating consumption of landscape, resources, environment, living beings can be stopped at all.

This "powerful, loud, melancholy song, into which more and more voices and memories invade" (Köck) offers the Austrian composer Johannes Maria Staud, already ennobled at a young age with a major pre- miere at the Vienna State Opera, in its experimental layout almost the ideal template to compose a mul- ti-perspective work. Staud creates a dazzling, com- plex whole; music and text retain their autonomies, but at times blend into an idiosyncratically mesmeriz- ing amalgam. The two Austrian exponents of their re- spective generations work together for the first time. The Weimar opera director Andrea Moses directs.
