»Terebrante« is Angélica Liddell’s exploration of flamenco, one of the key cultural treasures of her Spanish homeland. She uses a number of quotations from the legendary singer Manuel de los Santos Pastor Agujetas as parameters for her piece. Beyond these, she abandons herself to performance pure and simple in silence – an act on stage pertaining to the truth of flamenco and to pain and the cause of creativity.  This is one of her central motifs: »Without pain, there would be no Liddell« one Spanish critic wrote recently.  Emptiness, torment, the urge to slice open her skin or her soul also runs through »Terebrante«, particularly because for the duration of the evening, flamenco is merely a suggestion or a wrapper – not a note of flamenco is heard.

The Spanish performance artist Angélica Liddell, born in 1966, can justifiably be described as a legend, one of the great performers on the European stage, whose challenging, arrestingly visual productions have led many to describe her as an enfant terrible. Last year the Find Festival at the Berlin Schaubühne honoured her with a retrospective. KUNSTFEST WEIMAR now presents the German Premiere of her latest work »Terebrante«.
