»THE LAST LAUGH«

Lichthaus Kino

A faithful hotel porter is demoted to the post of lavatory attendant on the grounds of his age. He is mocked and dishonoured until a miracle occurs. So much for the plot of this film, whose title cards are superfluous thanks to the film’s brilliant composition and the body language of Emil Jannings. The biggest and, until that time, most successful Ufa film – including foreign sales – is bursting with superlatives. According to the Berliner Tageblatt of its day, this film is “the best weapon for converting enemies of cinema”.
