Discursive musical evening with Sigalit Landau and guests

"Tower of Torment" is an artistic memorial project created for the Weimar Art Festival 2025 by the renowned Israeli artist Sigalit Landau to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Buchenwald: The short film draws on ancient Jewish traditions and refers to the fate of the forced labourers at the Buchenwald camp, who were exploited in the construction of the Weimar Gauforum, among other things.

A unique event within the framework of the art festival is the discursive-musical evening on 24 August. The internationally renowned composer and pianist Avia Kopelman presents her work "Before it all Began" in dialogue with Arvo Pärt's "Fratres". In a unique new composition, both pieces merge into an intense musical experience, performed live by the piano duo Dina Stojilković (piano) and Ilay Dahan (cello), complemented by Kopelman's live electronics. Sigalit Landau has chosen this sound installation to accompany her video work "Tower of Torment".

In addition, the artist and Jens-Christian Wagner, director of the Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation, will provide insights into the historical and artistic dimensions of the project during the course of the evening.
