During KUNSTFEST 2022, a group of students from the Public Art and New Artistic Strategies course at the Faculty of Art and Design at Bauhaus University Weimar will approach the pressing issue of waste by engaging in a collective musical experience together with all interested Weimar citizens. Together with their guests, the students will create the »Trashquestra«, a trash sound laboratory.
The goal is to build instruments exclusively from discarded materials in order to activate the people on Theaterplatz as a kind of musical ensemble. To do this, the students first need your help in collecting trash so that they can then transform it – preferably again together with you – into fantastic instruments. Afterwards, each artist can play on their own sound objects or even join the Trashquestra team. In the end, the participants will have the opportunity to perform in a whole orchestra in public space! In this way, the Theaterplatz becomes a creative stage. During the first two weeks of the KUNSTFEST, trash can be dropped off at the KUNSTFEST Pavilion on Theaterplatz, where students will offer a workshop and instruct visitors inside to build instruments. At the same time, a small recording studio will be opened at the pavilion, where all participants can have their musical contributions recorded. From this audio material a sound producer will compile the soundtrack for the project, a form of sonic artwork that will be presented and heard on the Theaterplatz during the last weekend of the KUNSTFEST. After making orchestral music together on the Theaterplatz, the participants can take their instruments home as souvenirs.
