On 30 August, the dance theatre production → »Izithukuthuku« will arrive at Kunstfest Weimar from Johannesburg, South Africa, as part of its first European tour. At the DNT’s Großes Haus, Kunstfest will present the German premiere of this captivating performance, which combines South African dance styles with pressing social issues.

→ »Izithukuthuku« takes a highly physical look at precarious work. The dance piece weaves the fast-paced street dance style of isiPantsula with traditional dances such as Ndlamu and Setapa into a universal language of survival. A fascinating, percussive soundscape emerges on stage: sewing machines hum, typewriters clatter, and the rhythmic tapping on transport crates mimics the beat of a train cramming workers into the cities.

The work is artistically shaped by Vusi Mdoyi, a dancer, choreographer and artistic director of the VAP Dance Academy, as well as co-founder of the Impilo Mapantsula Global Movement. Having grown up in a township, he developed a deep connection to isiPantsula – a form of dance that intertwines culture, politics and history. Together with dramaturg Jeremy Nedd and director Phala Ookeditse Phala, he has created a performance about cross-generational memory and ongoing protest, which celebrates the survival, dignity and resistance of people whose stories are often overlooked.
